Q: If I make a gift to a national organization like HSUS, American Humane Association or PETA, will the Palm Valley Animal Center receive a portion of my gift?

A: No. There is no national organization which financially supports local shelters. As a non-profit organization we depend on the time, talents and efforts to continue our operations. Supporting your local shelter supports your community.

Q: Where does the money come from to support the animal welfare services and programs at the Palm Valley Animal Center?

A: The Palm Valley Animal Center does not receive federal or local government funding. Support of The Palm Valley Animal Center is from individuals, corporate and business gifts and private funding. A majority of our funding comes from individuals in the form of cash donations, bequests, trust endowments and fees.

Q: Is The Palm Valley Animal Center affiliated with any other animal welfare agencies?

A: No, we are an independent organization and not affiliated with other agencies.

Q: Does The Palm Valley Animal Center pick up loose, stray or deceased animals?

A: No. That is the responsibility of the animal control agency for that particular area.

Q: What animals do you have available for adoption?

A: Palm Valley Animal Center has all different kinds of animals up for adoption. All different breeds, colors and personalities to fit anyone.

Q: Where do Palm Valley Animal Center animals come from?

A: The animals that enter our shelter come from all different walks of life. Some are picked up by animal control agencies and some are dropped off because their owners can no longer care for them.

Q: Do you put animals to sleep?

A: Unfortunately we do have to put animals to sleep. We receive more than 40,000 animals a year and not all are adoptable, due to health or behavior. For the safety of the owner and other pets, we must evaluate their health and temperament before making a decision if they are adoptable or not.

However, the Palm Valley Animal Center has developed several new programs to help combat the pet overpopulation issue. Please navigate this site to see how you can help play a role in increasing the number of pets that get adopted.

Q: What are the procedures for adoption?

A: We invite everyone to come to the shelter and view our orphans. If you find one you like, one of our staff or volunteers will get the animal out and give you a chance to get to know each other. If you’re a good match for each other and your interested in adopting, we will ask you to complete an adoption application. Once your application is approved, you are welcome to adopt.

Q: How often do animals need their vaccination?

A: For the first year, puppies and kittens require booster vaccinations. After the first year, annual vaccinations and veterinary exams are sufficient. Monthly heartworm and flea preventative is essential to avoid deadly heartworm disease and other potentially fatal illness.

Q: Does the Palm Valley Animal Center perform cruelty investigations?

A: Unfortunately, not at this time. It is the responsibility of the animal control agency for the area in which the offense occurred.
