Kids Can Help Too!
Here are some fun ways to help:
Organize a neighborhood collection drive. Make a colorful and informative flyer that asks for donations of supplies that we can use at the shelter. Pass the flyers out to your neighbors and post them throughout your neighborhood. You’ll be surprised at how quickly you can collect a variety
of items for the shelter.
Hold a fundraiser for the shelter. A bake sale or garage sale can be fun and raise money and awareness simultaneously. Likewise a dog or car wash can raise money to support Palm Valley Animal Center.
Encourage your class to hold a penny, blanket, towel, or food drive and see how much you can raise for the animals.
Tricks to Teach your Pet
Did you know tricks are not just for fun but also keep the pet happy and exercised?
Teach your dog to wave.
- Have some tasty treats available. Remember a tasty treat a small chunk of cheese or a meat; something that your dog would not ordinarily get to eat. The tastier the treat, the harder your dog will work for it.
- Make your dog face you. Hold the treat in your hand and be ready to give it away.
- Blow on your dog’s face lightly. If your dog lifts its paw to if face, stop blowing, and give it the treat right away. Repeat until they have successfully raised their paw several times.
- After doing this several times, stop and go play with you dog. When you are done playing, try and do the trick again.
- When you try again, it may take a few tries before they get the trick down again. You may try blowing a few times.
- After a about the third time your dog should be offering its paw more often.
Teach your dog to dance.
- Have some tasty treats available. Remember a tasty treat a small chunk of cheese or a meat; something that your dog would not ordinarily get to eat. The tastier the treat, the harder your dog will work for it.
- Make your dog face you. Hold the treat in your hand and be ready to give it away.
- Hold the treat over the dog so it will stand on its back legs. When the dog does this, give it the treat and commend the dog on its success.
- After doing this several times, stop and go play with you dog. When you are done playing, try and do the trick again. You may wait until the next day.
- Avoid treating the dog if it places its paws on you or anything else while “dancing”. Slowly wait longer and longer to treat your pet so they will learn to stay on its back legs longer. Remember to let them know they are doing well.
