Responsible Pet Ownership
Cats:
Being a responsible pet guardian means having your cat spayed or neutered as soon as possible, you can usually do this between at 6 to 8 months old. Having your cat spayed or neutered will keep it healthier, better behaved,
and it will likely live longer.
You will need to make sure you make your home cat-proof. Whatever a toddler can get into doubles for a cat. Anything that is easily swallowed, toxic, or breakable should be put away. You must remember that cats clean themselves and can be harmed by chemicals that you clean with. Be sure to wipe the cleansed surface thoroughly.
Once you find a litter that your cat likes, you should stick with it to avoid and litter box issues later on. You will need a one box for each cat and they will need to placed in a quiet area of the home. Keep the litter box clean, scoop everyday and keep anything that will cause the cat to be uncomfortable, away from the box. If your cat is uncomfortable when it is trying to use the litter box, it is more likely to go some where out side the litter box, like on the carpet, or on your bed. Prevention is the best way to avoid these problems.
Issues also can arise from any kind of changes in the house. These issues can be caused by using different types of litter, using a box lid, new pets and moving furniture. Make sure your cat gets plenty of exercise each day. Play games with your cat that involve pouncing, chasing, and “killing” small toys.
Groom your cat or kitten on a regular basis. Breeds that have long hair may need to be combed daily to insure there are no knots or mats. You will want to check the ears, mouth and nails too. Ask your veterinarian about what to look for.
Dogs:
Dogs should also be spayed or neutered as soon as possible. You can usually do this between at 6 to 8 months old. Having your dog spayed or
neutered will keep it healthier, better behaved, and it will likely live longer.
In order to boost your dogs self confidence, make sure you specify a place that is just for it. A bed made out of a soft towel or blanket will help keep it comfortable. When the dog is stresses put am article of clothing or a pillow case with your scent on it to help the dog stay calm. You may use this place as “time-out” area when the dog is overly excited.
Being successful in house training depends on how often the dog is let outside to use the restroom and where the dog is confined. When used correctly Crate Training is one of the best ways to house train a dog.. This place can also become a “safety” zone for the dog or puppy. Punishment is not the answer when it comes to house training. Rubbing the dog or puppies nose in it doesn’t help at all. Show you dog the proper place and praise it when it goes in the correct area. You would want to keep your dog or puppy in a designated are until it gets the idea.
You might think about putting your dog in a training class. Interacting with strangers and other dogs will be a vital experience for your dog. Focusing on the one on one relationship between you and you dog will prove to be beneficial for both you and your dog. Training should be built on trust and not fear.
Obnoxious pests such as fleas, ticks and mites can cause health problems for you dog. Remedies are available; just ask your veterinarian.
